Hot Sauce

“Hot Sauce”  |  Anthony Satori

There is a wall at our local fish house which displays various brands of hot sauce from around the world.  It features sauces of many different flavors, styles, origins, and intensities.  When I look at it, it makes me think of how the sharing of food and flavors from different regions and countries has a way of making the world a smaller place, bringing otherwise disparate people closer together, causing us to feel more connected to one another’s cultures and traditions.

If you want to understand someone better, share a meal with them.  If you want to understand a place better, take the time to seek out and experience some of the local cuisine.  If you want to feel closer to a specific person, cook something that is meaningful to you and enjoy it with them, and then let them do the same for you.  Food can be so much more than just nutrition, so much more than just “filling up.”  Food can play a very real role in both intercultural understanding and interpersonal relations, because it touches at the very heart of the human experience.

“I have dreamed in my life, dreams that have stayed with me ever after, and changed my ideas; they have gone through and through me, like wine through water, and altered the color of my mind.”

Mystical Energy

“Mystical Energy”  |  Anthony Satori

There is a mystical energy in the universe.  It lives all around us.  It vibrates just beneath the surface of everything that is good in the world.  It nourishes us through nature, beauty, compassion and love — through art, empathy, kindness and wonder.  This mystical energy is the elixir of the universe.  It can expand our consciousness and give our existence infinite new layers of meaning and beauty, if we allow it to.

The Other Side of the Veil

BlogImage - SatoriCircleDotCom - May 13 2017

“Sphinx”  |  Anthony Satori

There have been countless attempts throughout history to decipher, represent, and/or access the spiritual world.  Such efforts usually take the form of religion, philosophy, ritual, or artwork, and they are almost always fueled by our innate human drive to discover and/or create a door between the known world and that which exists beyond.  As can be expected, every door that has been created by man up until now has been, by necessity, inherently flawed.  The simple fact is that it is almost impossible to escape the corrupting influence of human imperfection, especially over time.  But the destination is true.  That which lies on the other side of the veil is real.  It is pure, it is powerful, and it is eminently worth pursuing.  So keep trying.  Keep seeking.  Every genuine attempt to expand our understanding of — and our connection with — the compassionate creative Spirit which pervades the universe is a gift to the future of the collective human soul.

Portrait of Fred

“Fred Armisen” (2017)  |  Anthony Satori

One of the goals of a portrait is to capture a glimpse of the spirit within, to create an image that expresses some essential aspect of the subject’s nature.

Fred Armisen is an actor, writer, comedian and musician.  He is best known for his work on Saturday Night Live and Portlandia.  He is easily one of the funniest and most talented performers working today, but also, to my experience, he is one of the nicest people in the industry.  Watching Armisen’s improv and character work on screen you get a feeling of genuine warmth, intelligence and humor, and these traits come across even more in person, when he is just being himself.

Dancing is Poetry

“Carnival”  |  (Venice, Italy)  |  Anthony Satori

“The dance can reveal everything mysterious that is hidden in music, and it has the additional merit of being human and palpable.  Dancing is poetry with arms and legs.”

— Charles Baudelaire
