When an animal crawls up onto your lap and falls asleep, it is a sweet gesture of warmth and trust. Animals read people very purely, on both an intuitive and instinctive level. If a dog or a cat warms up to you, especially if it is soon after meeting you, it should be taken as a very high compliment, indeed.
